The volume, quality and speed of information gathering and news publications by journalists is extraordinary. Everyone is a potential beneficiary, but the abundance of news and media fragmentation are practical hurdles for many decision makers to gain from the power of news.
We see collaboration with news publishers and the scalable deployment of research-validated algorithms as the solution to harness the power of news for your use case. Every day.
Below we list the current use cases we are developing together with our clients. We are also very much excited to hear about your information needs and work with you on a Sentometrics solution that provides you that information.
Banks
Large European banks have a significant loan exposure to at least 5’000 corporate clients. The bank manages this using a bank-level risk and sales leads team, and a decentralized group of account managers. The data team at the HQ receives the event-based media signals and uses it to enhance the early warning system for timely detection of credit deterioration, as well as informing the account manager about commercial opportunities. The systematic approach reduces costs of bad loans and increases revenues by grasping the event-related sales opportunities.
Asset management
News drives cashflow expectations and risk appetite of investors. Given the speed of market reaction and the volume of news data, a systematic quantitative approach is recommended to extract the asset management signals from the news. The risk on/off signals steer the optimal tactical asset allocation decision between bond and equity funds. Thematic risk factors computed from news data predict the cross-section of returns and can thus be used to design portfolios that are hedged against qualitative risk factors extracted from news data. For the reward-driving news-based indicators, optimized portfolios seeking exposure are actively managed. In the context of ESG investing, the news event signals allows timely portfolio adjustments in case of controversies mentioned in the news.
Real estate
Buying a house is probably among the most important financial decisions in the lifetime of a household. Surprisingly few households are fully informed about the neighbourhood when making this decision. Our neighbourhood news event archive helps the households to take informed decisions and thus avoid the regret to have not consulted the news about construction works, incidents of violence, or activities by neighbourhood committees. We also support real estate agents to stand out in terms of informing their clients.
Research
Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion
(Edward Deming). Economic researchers usually have plenty of questions but often lack the right data to answer that question in an evidence-based way. Crowdsourcing the question in the millions of news articles provides a time series of answers allowing the research to extract trends and plug in the thematic indicator time series into econometric models to understand the relation with other variables.
